Bylaws

Association Governance

The bylaws outline governance, membership, leadership, and ethics to promote professionalism in correctional administration.

Article I – Name

The name of this organization shall be the Mississippi Jail Administrators Association (MJAA).

Article II – Purpose

The purpose of the Mississippi Jail Administrators Association is to promote leadership, professionalism, collaboration, and excellence in jail administration throughout the State of Mississippi.

Article III – Membership

Membership in the Association shall be open to correctional professionals and individuals who support the mission and objectives of the Association.

Membership Categories

Active Membership

Individuals currently employed in jail or detention administration or related criminal justice professions within Mississippi.

Associate Membership

Vendors, educators, consultants, or organizations interested in supporting the Association.

Honorary Membership

Individuals recognized for significant contributions to corrections or the Association.

Retired Membership

Former correctional professionals who previously served in the field.

Article IV – Officers

The Association leadership is composed of elected officers responsible for guiding the mission, operations, and professional initiatives of the organization.

Article V – Executive Board

The Executive Board conducts Association business between meetings, approves expenditures, develops policies, establishes committees, and recommends initiatives supporting the Association’s mission and operations.

Article VI – Meetings

The Association shall conduct annual meetings, regular meetings, conferences, training events, and special meetings throughout the year to support collaboration, education, and professional development.

Article VII – Committees

The Association may establish standing and special committees to support training initiatives, conferences, ethics, legislation, awards, and member engagement activities.

Article VIII – Finances

The Association shall maintain proper financial procedures, approved banking practices, annual financial reviews, and responsible management of all Association funds in accordance with Executive Board policies.

Article IX – Code of Ethics

Members of the Mississippi Jail Administrators Association are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct.
Conduct themselves professionally and ethically.
Promote integrity and accountability.
Respect the rights and dignity of all individuals.
Support lawful and humane detention practices.
Uphold the reputation of the Association.

Article X – Parliamentary Authority

The current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern the Association in all cases where they are applicable and not inconsistent with these bylaws.

Article XI – Amendments

These bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of active members present at a regular or special meeting, provided written notice has been distributed to the membership prior to voting.

Article XII – Dissolution

Upon dissolution of the Association, all remaining assets shall be distributed in accordance with applicable Mississippi laws and nonprofit requirements.

Certification

These bylaws were officially adopted by the membership of the Mississippi Jail Administrators Association and serve as the governing framework for the organization’s leadership, membership, ethics, and operations.
